Thanks to your support, we've been able to raise over
$150,000 (100% of our goal) through our 15 Years, 15 Voices campaign!
Together we are providing youth with a voice and creative outlet.
Please join US
in inspiring lives through theatre.
This
year The Unusual Suspects (US) celebrates its birthday by
spotlighting 15 voices from the last 15 years. These voices represent
the community of youth, artists, staff, volunteers, funders and
partners that have been such an important of our history. Keep your
eyes open for the next 15 Years, 15 Voices and make the next 15 years
as transformative as the last by helping us reach our goal of raising
$150,000 the next 15 months!
A Stellar
and Active Alumnus
La Salle Kimbrough
"I like to take people on a journey with my words."
La Salle Kimbrough first
participated in the last half of The Unusual Suspects Spring 2008
program at Camp David Gonzalez, helping to put finishing touches on
the script of "The Belly of the Beast". He then went on to perform in
the Fall 2008 production of "The Belly of the Beast", playing the part
of a record producer called 'The King'.
Since graduating from our program, La Salle has enrolled in Santa
Monica College, and is due to begin classes there soon. He also
recently worked as a script consultant for a feature film, hired by
the screenwriter. We are honored to have been able to work with him,
and look forward to all of the amazing things he is sure to
accomplish.
Former US intern Marion Germond interviewed him about his experience
in our programs.
What inspires you most as an artist?
My individuality. It motivates me to do things that I didn't think I
was capable of.
Do you write on your own?
Yes. I enjoy writing about my personal experiences. I like to take
people on a journey or path with my words, without using pictures.
What other productions have you been part of, besides the ones you
have done with the US?
I helped create a positive orientation video for new people coming to
the camp. Through rapping, we created an informational and upbeat
music video.
How did you feel both writing and performing in the play "The Belly
of the Beast"?
The writing process in the Spring of '08 was challenging because I
came to the Camp at the very end of the Unusual Suspects program. But
once I got into it, I was able to really fit into the characters we
were creating. The performance part of the program was really fun
because I love to make people laugh.
How did you find out about the Unusual Suspects?
I heard people talking about the program in the dorms. When we were
all asked if we wanted to participate, I said 'yes'. I enjoyed it
since the very first day I went.
What did you take away from your experience working with US and
would you do it again?
It helped to give me patience and it helped me to get used to other
peoples personalities. Yes, I would participate in a program like this
again
What is your ultimate goal or dream as an artist?
I want to be a big star in the entertainment industry and possibly act
again in a play someday.
